Besides skiing the best powder the San Juan Mountains has to offer, there are some other great options to enhance your Silverton Powdercats experience. First off, there is a lot of great skiing located in the vicinity around Silverton. The closest lift accessible option is Silverton Mountain ski area, they specialize in guided off piste skiing. Both Telluride Ski Resort and Durango Mountain Resort are also close by. The back country skiing out off Silverton is world class and easily accessed. The town of Silverton also has a small one lift ski hill right in town, great for kids. If you are a Nordic or cross country skier there is an excellent Nordic center near by along with groomed snowmobile trails that ski well. The Durango / Silverton / Telluride area is a skiing Mecca.  Some other fun winter activities might include a trip to the Ouray Ice Park which has guiding and instruction available. Fly fishing on the San Juan River or a trip to Mesa Verde's ancient Anasazi cliff dwellings are also good options. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is still operating in the winter. Guided snowmobile tours , dog sledding and snow shoeing is also available.
Telluride Ski Area is 1.5 hour drive from El Diablo head quarters. Durango is 1 hour away and Durango Mountain Resort is a half hour away. Silverton is ten minutes away, with Silverton Mountain Ski Area right up the road. Silverton is your most affordable and closest place to stay when skiing with Silverton Powdercats. It is a true unspoiled Colorado mountain town, the real deal. It's where we generally recommend people stay. A trip to the grocery store is not a bad idea before arriving. If you want good food and night life, Telluride might be more your style. Durango also has both, but the skiing isn't as good. As far as getting to the area, you can fly into Durango or Montrose.
